"Kyoudai" / "Aniki" [How Ishimaru & Mondo should be calling each other]

crocus29:

I keep seeing the English fandom’s Ishimaru and Mondo calling each other ‘aniki’. Culturally speaking, they shouldn’t be x___x. I can’t blame you because it’s Japanese, but I can explain about it ^^

—- The words ‘Kyoudai’ and ‘Aniki’ —-

+ 兄弟 (Kyoudai / Kyōdai) +

In Dangan Ronpa’s Japanese version, Ishimaru and Mondo actually refer to each other as ‘kyoudai' (Rewatch episode 4 or 5 and listen to them~ :3)

兄弟 (kyoudai / kyōdai) = brother / sibling

Particularly ‘male sibling’. The Japanese word for ‘female sibling’/’sister’ is ‘shimai’ (姉妹) [Although referring to sisters as ‘kyoudai’ in Japan is also common >,>]

+ 兄貴 (Aniki) +

兄貴 (aniki) = elder brother / one’s senior

This one also means ‘brother’, but it specifically means ‘elder brother’. Both Mondo and Ishi calling each other ‘elder brother’ would be strange because they’re the same age >,<”“…

Another fact is that ‘aniki' is actually a slang term for 'elder brother’, used commonly only by gangsters/delinquents and yakuza to refer to their elder brothers and seniors [The word for ‘elder brother’ used by common people is 兄 (ani) or 兄さん (nii-san).]

In Dangan Ronpa’s Japanese version, Mondo refers to Daiya as ‘aniki’, which makes sense because they’re from a biker gang. Ishimaru calling Mondo ‘aniki' will make him sound like a gangster =u=„” [If Ishi has to say 'elder brother' under any circumstance, use 'nii-san’. Unless you’re making him say ‘aniki' deliberately for effect.]

Apply this knowledge and you won’t sound culturally wrong. If you help me spread this info, I’ll be super thankful TuT„”
